Frequently Asked Questions: internships as part of your studies
Do I have to undertake an internship in order to graduate?
No, internships are not a course requirement of our Master in Sustainable Development and Global Governance. Undertaking an internship during your time with us is entirely optional.
Can I take an internship instead of one of the subjects? How many credits is an internship worth?
No, internships do not give academic credits in our master’s programme. You still have to pass all the coursework and your master’s thesis. Your thesis, however, can be related to your internship practice.
I don’t speak Spanish. Will that be a problem for internships?
No, internships opportunities are available to all our students. Sometimes our partner institutions ask us for students who can speak a particular language. Being in Madrid, there are a few internships that require Spanish, as well as others that instead require other languages. There will be opportunities for non-Spanish speakers, although if you have conversational-level Spanish there will be more institutions you can take an internship with in Spain.
I have already found an institution where I want to do an internship. Can I arrange my own internship?
Yes, we encourage our students to find internship opportunities that fit their interests and expertise. We do have to approve of your internship before it begins (so that we can make sure it won’t interfere with your studies) and sign an agreement with the institution.
Are internships paid?
Yes and no: some of the internships are paid, some are not. Importantly, the main goal of the internships at MASUS is to complement your training as a sustainability professional, not to provide you with income.
